Note to the Moderator

Dear Sir/ Madam

Throughout A2 we have been asked to create a promotional package. This consisted of two ancillary tasks (I chose a website home page, and a digipak) and we had to create a music video (I did this for James Bay "If you Ever Want To Be in Love"). For the main construction of the music video I worked with Canisha Chakadya. Please use the labels to navigate yourself round my blog.

Many Thanks,

Digipak analysis - Ella Croft

Questionaire Analysis

Questionnaire analysis

We conducted a questionnaire so we could widen our understanding of what are audience are looking for so we can interpret this into our music video. We asked people to fill out our questionnaire in our sixth form and we posted it on social media so we could get replies from a larger range of people. In the end we managed to get 50 replies. This is my analysis of the questionnaire.

How old are you?

We asked this so we could see the main age of the people that are interested in music videos. The most popular age group was between 16 and 21 which was 86% out of the 50 people that answered out questionnaire. This makes it clear to me that these are the people we need to be targeting. The least popular age group was under 15’s this means that we don’t have to worry about being too explicit as our target audience is young adults not preteens.

What is your gender?

We asked this question so we could see who is more interested in the music industry and music videos. Ideally we wanted to make our music video equally for male and female. The results we received were 72% female and 28% male. This came across as quite surprising to me as I thought interest in music for this age group is popular for both genders.

 What is your occupation?

The options were un-employed, part-time, full-time, student, or other. We allowed the candidates to answer more than one. The majority of the answers were students with a part time job. This is what we were aiming for as our main target audience. We decided this is the occupation we were aiming for because they would be around the ages of 16-21 which will be dealing with relationships and heart breaks which we will portray in our music video.

What is you favourite music genre?

We decided to ask this question as it would make it clear to us what music genre our target audience like the most. We were heart set on doing an Indie music video of “Let it go” by James Bay. However if our audience didn’t want an Indie genre we would have adapted to suit them. The most popular genre is pop with 26% closely following by R&B with 22%. This was expected as this genre is currently over powering the music charts right now. Indie got 20% which we were happy with as it was up in the top three. We decided to stick with the Indie genre.
Do you like music videos?

This question was used just to make it clear to our audience that this is what we are doing. 96% said yes and 4% said no. When we looked closer and who said yes and who said no we noticed that only the people over 35 said no, which we were okay with as they are not our target audience.

In your opinion what makes music videos more appealing to watch?

This question was used so we could get ideas from our audience for our music video. The replies were very helpful and extremely interesting. Some of the best replies were “The storyline relates to the lyrics” this was our main aim in our music video and we were pleased to see that this is what people look for. We had about 20 other responses implying the same thing. Another answer was “I would like it to be realistic not fake.” We are hoping to keep to a realistic love story that the audience can adapt too. There were 5 others who said the same thing. A lot of people said that they would like to see “good looking people.” We had around 15 replies saying this. We have decided that we will incorporate the male gaze into our music video.

What type of music video do you like?

We had the three main options of narrative, concept, and performance. WE wanted to do a narrative music video with a few concepts. 64% of the people that did our music video said narrative. And 20% said concept. Narrative was the most important and we are 100% sure we will focus on doing this in our music video.
What services have you heard of that allow you to watch music videos?

The majority of the people that answered this question said YouTube which is where we would post out music video if we were to upload it so people could watch it. A small amount of people said TV music channels and iTunes which is not the area of the industry we’re looking for.

What stands out the most for you in a music video?
For most people the answer was mise en scene which was 56% this could be because they don’t understand the reason for camera shots and movements etc. Mise en scene consist of props, make up, costume etc. I think the artists outfit will appeal to the audience the most as at this age trend is what people look for.

How many music videos do you watch a week?

We asked this question so we could see how important a music video is to people. The majority was 1-5 which had 68%. Only 6% of the people that did our questionnaire said they don’t watch music videos which gave us confidence in our popular our music video may be.

Website Draft 4

http://ellacroft98.wix.com/jamesbay

I have changed all the fonts so that they are the same and the same as my digipak. I have chosen a font that suits my artist and his genre. I have also added audio to my website, so that when you enter the website the song "If you ever want to be in love" plays, as this is the song we used to make our music video.

Digipak draft 5

Here I have adjusted the lighting of each image so they are all roughly the same shade. I have reduced the grainy effect on the main image to make it pop out more. I have also added numbers to my song list. In addition to this I have moved the bar code and logo off of the artist.

Digipak Draft 4

I took what my teacher said into consideration. She stated that I had to many fonts. I agree with this so I found one font that represents my artists and his genre. I decided to use the same font for all of the text used on this digipak.

Audience Feedback

Yesterday, we decided to get three girls and two boys in our target audience, age range to watch our music video. We received a lot of positive feedback which gave use the confidence that we had attracted our target audience, We also received some constructive criticism in which we were very happy to receive. We will take everything they said into consideration to make our music video better. To watch the audience feedback go to the Ella and Canisha Group Blog.

Planning for the Evaluation

Evaluation
Question 1 - Prezi

·         The first thing I would do is place my music video against another music video. I will talk about the codes and conventions each music video uses and why they are different.
·         I will talk about what I would do next time after looking at the music videos or what I would do differently.
·         The type of things I would look at is mise en scene, colours used, performance based, narrative, or concept.
·         Secondly, I would place my digipak next to a digipak that has already been used. I will talk about the codes and conventions of both. I will also talk about what I like about the other one and say how I would incorporate into my digipak next time.
·         I will talk about the shots I took and why they work. I will also talk about the font types and the colour house style.
·         Thirdly, I will compare my website homepage to another website homepage. I may even compare it to a James Bay website that has already been used.
·         I will talk about social media links, moving images, audio and what I would add next time.
·         Lastly, I will talk about the package as a whole and how I attracted my audience. For example, the type of clothes he wears, the types of shots used, the house style (font, colour scheme.)
·         I will make sure that the music video, the digipak, and the website are all of an indie genre as the conventions used will be relevant to my package.

Question 2 – Youtube (Movie Maker)

·         Firstly, I will talk about the importance of having a brand identity. I will then discuss if I think I have created a brand identity throughout the package. Here I will talk about the colour schemes on each ancillary.
·         For this I will compare my digipak and my website and talk about the colours they have the same, the font, and the images.
·         Secondly, I will talk about why I think my digipak will sell to an audience. For this I will get some audience feedback on what they like about the digipak and if they would buy the CD or not. I will then use the information they gave me to talk about why it would sell or what I would do differently.
·         I will do the same for the website home page. I will ask people from my target audience to say if they can navigate there way round their website, if they like the images used, if they would follow the artist etc.
·         Lastly, I will talk about how both ancillary’s show the genre of the artist. In this section I will talk about the house style, mise en scene, and casting.

Question 3  - Emaze

·         I will start this question off by talking about the importance of audience feedback throughout this process.
·         I will then talk about when I asked for audience feedback and how it helped me make my work better.
·         Secondly, I will give examples of positive audience feedback I have received and how that motivated me to make my package better.
·         Thirdly, I will give examples of negative feedback I received and I will talk about how this was most helpful as I could improve my work based on what my target audience wanted to see.
·         I will talk about how all my audience feedback was given by people in my target audience besides my teacher.
·         Next, I will talk about how my audience feedback has changed me as a media student, and how it will help me in tasks to come.
·         Lastly, I will talk about what I have learned from the feedback I have received.
·         For example – The audience is the most important, you always need fresh eyes to look at your work, negative feedback is better than positive.

Question 4 - Blogger

·         I will split this question into three sections.
·         Research and Planning, Main Construction, and Evaluation
·         I will talk about which technology I used for each part of this coursework, I will then analysis if it was effective or not.
·         I will be sure to talk about the difficulties I came across and how I moved past them.
·         I will talk about how each piece of technology helped me to make my work better.
·         I will make sure to use screen grabs and videos of the technology in this question.

Ella- the main thing I have noticed across all of the ancillaries is that you are inconsistent in the font style for the artist. Choose one font that reflects the genre and the artist and brand this across the whole project. Also, the webpage still lacks some audio and could perhaps have moving images.
